During an initial day in his new role, Zohran Mamdani vowed to “reimagine” New York City, declaring “a new era” and an audacious start to his term.

A Groundbreaking Mayor

The 34-year-old figure, who was a relatively obscure state assemblyman, is the city's first mayor of South Asian descent. He additionally marked a milestone by being the first to be take the oath of office using the Qur'an.

“A time such as this seldom arrives and rarer still is it that the citizens whose hands are upon the levers of change,” Mamdani added.

Ignoring advice to temper hopes, the mayor declared: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to redefine is that of modest goals. Beginning today we will rule with courage and vision.”

Steering by Socialist Ideals

Mamdani explicitly affirmed his core beliefs. “I was elected as a democratic socialist and I will govern as one. I will not forsake my ideals for concern of being called radical,” he said to an enthusiastic response.

The ceremony was a two-part event, starting with a late-night oath-taking in a old subway station. He was officially inaugurated on the front steps of city hall by political ally Bernie Sanders, who praised Mamdani's election as a victory over political establishments.

An Ambitious Blueprint

Mamdani now faces one of the most demanding jobs in American politics, with a agenda including:

• Subsidized daycare
• Free buses
• A halt to rent increases for nearly 1 million households
• A trial program of municipally-operated grocery stores

The estimated $10 billion expense of these programs may prove difficult to fund. Mamdani has vowed to raise taxes on the wealthiest New Yorkers and corporations. However, as a city subject to the state government, he will require the legislative support of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Facing Political Challenges

The new mayor also faces apprehension from some Jewish New Yorkers concerned about his past comments regarding Israel. Sensitivities were highlighted during the transition when a senior aide resigned over controversial past tweets.

Mamdani has moved to smooth over these concerns by convincing Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to stay on, preventing the appearance of losing a top Jewish official.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has called Mamdani a “socialist” and warned of withholding government money. Despite this, a prior encounter between the two was described as surprisingly friendly.

The Core Challenges of Leadership

Traditionally, New York mayors are evaluated by their success in providing city upkeep: trash collection, reducing the rat infestation, fixing roadways, and ensuring smooth subway service.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams touted his team's anti-crime efforts, citing record low numbers of murders and gun violence in 2025, with 301 homicides reported.

As his term begins, Mamdani and his wife will relocate from their Astoria apartment to the stately Gracie Mansion. The outgoing mayor offered a quirky piece of advice about a supposed resident spirit in the home, which reportedly only haunts those who fail to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani concluded his remarks with a direct statement: “The work has only just begun.”
