Wimbledon Adopts Video Review Technology in 2025.

The Championships court with video review system

Wimbledon will follow the American and Australian Opens in employing replay technology.

Video review technology will be launched at The Championships in the upcoming tournament.

Competitors are granted the right to question specific calls made by the chair umpire, mirroring the practice already in operation at each of the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

This technology is slated for use on Centre Court and Court One for the duration of the tournament and on the other four featured courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This development arrives only a year after the AELTC implemented electronic line calling, which effectively ended the 147-year role of line judges.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Players will not be permitted to challenge the call of the electronic line calling, but they can ask for the umpire to review specific decisions, including:

  • Whether a ball has double-bounced.
  • If a ball made contact with an rival's racket or body on the way past.
  • Potential hindrance end of a point.

Importantly, there will be an unlimited number on the amount of reviews a player can ask for.

Case in Point

A recent incident occurred in Indian Wells last week, where a top player initiated the video challenge against his opponent.

The British player admitted it was a difficult call for the official, but believed his rival had "used the regulations effectively."

The umpire viewed a replay and determined Draper was guilty of hindrance, granting the point to his opponent.

Broader Adoption

Video reviews aren't new for Grand Slams. The system was adopted at the American major for two years and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour will have video reviews implemented at all of its tournaments.

Further Updates

A further innovation at The Championships this year will be the introduction of graphical cues on scoreboards to complement the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses situations where the crowd have occasionally been unsure whether a ball was out or in.

In other news, with precisely a century of days to go until the start of the Championships, the AELTC have further revealed an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
