Pat Cummins Poised for a Significant Contribution in Ashes Series

Test match action

The pace bowler has claimed 309 wickets in 71 five-day games with an stellar bowling average.

Australia's chief selector Bailey has declared that captain Pat Cummins will have a crucial role in the forthcoming England-Australia contest.

Speculation had been growing that the 32-year-old might miss the series due to a stress fracture in his back that was still troubling him.

Initial reports from the squad suggested no official announcement had been made regarding whether he would play, with the extended contest set to start on 21 November in Western Australia.

Bailey expressed that his recovery is on track and was "optimistic" about the likelihood of being involved.

"We're aware that the clock is ticking and multiple considerations around that, not just the physical problem, but other factors as well," Bailey remarked.

"The outlook is good. We firmly believe that he'll participate in a key capacity. With luck from the opening match. If not, we'll reassess."

Previous Setbacks

Cummins was ruled out the ODI and T20 games against India and New Zealand in the previous weeks after scans revealed a stress reaction in his back.

There is a track record of back injuries, with setbacks in multiple past seasons leading to absences from multiple domestic campaigns in a limited period.

The bowler mentioned he would be proactive in his approach in his rehabilitation process to ensure his availability for the contest.

Bailey noted that there was no confirmation if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his rehabilitation but conceded it was "pressing" for him to recover fully for the first Test.

Alternative Arrangements

In case of absence, ex-skipper Smith will assume leadership.

All-rounder Cameron Green was excluded lately from the national team for their limited-overs matches against India as a precautionary measure because of an abdominal issue.

Bailey described it as a "minor" injury and mentioned that he'll feature in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "well-prepared to resume bowling."

"Considerable effort has gone into creating the schedule for him to take part for the first Test as an batting and bowling option," the selector detailed.

"His involvement was limited to the starting games regardless. His aggressive style the bat in limited-overs, even if it just sets him back for another day, the choice was made to take a cautious route."
