RAF Typhoon jets have operated alongside French warplanes in a joint strike against an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory operated by the Islamic State group (IS), as stated by the British defence ministry.

The location, identified by surveillance, was assessed as containing munitions and bombs, the release indicated, and was situated in mountains just to the north of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our fighter planes used precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to target a several entry passages providing entry to the site... early reports are that the objective was successfully hit," the MoD said.

There was no sign of any harm to civilians in the attack on Saturday evening and all the aircraft returned to base without incident, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon FGR4s were supported by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

The Islamic State group - also known as the so-called Islamic State - imposed militant control over significant areas in both Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This strike underscores the UK's leading role, and resolve to operate in unison with allied nations, to eradicate any revival of the terrorist group and their violent and radical beliefs in the area," Britain's Defence Chief the Defence Secretary stated.

RAF aircraft have carried out overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "prevent any attempted comeback" of the group following its routing at the climactic battle in Baghuz in the year 2019, the authorities noted.

"I want to thank all the members of British forces involved in this mission for their professionalism and their bravery," Healey commented. "They were part of numerous British troops on duty over Christmas and New Year. This action, to remove militants who pose a risk to our way of life, demonstrates how British military are prepared to act, throughout the year, ensuring Britain's security domestically and influential overseas."

During December, the American forces carried out what it described as a "major assault" on IS targets in Syria, following an ambush resulted in the deaths of two American soldiers and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.

The UN estimates IS still maintains roughly 5-7 thousand fighters in both countries.
