A tragic train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the pace and management of the country's key public works projects.
The accident happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a rail link constructed to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was intended to establish an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, intended to promote economic development in the area.
“We are going to meticulously determine the reasons behind this accident,” affirmed the national leader.
The leader confirmed that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in critical condition. The leader stated plans to go to Oaxaca to speak with those affected.
Key Undertaking of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone public works project of the immediate past president, whose time in office finished the year before. This rail line was intimately linked to his government's developmental goals for the southeastern region.
Another massive train initiative from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the broader strategy to kickstart the economic fortunes of a historically less developed part of the country.
Project Execution and Risks Apprehensions
The construction of both rail lines was managed by the army, marking a notable increase of its role in civilian works. They were completed at an fast-tracked pace, defying expectations to be partially opened before the end of that government.
However, this rushed timetable had concurrently sparked persistent apprehensions over safety standards.
- Sunday's derailment was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This encompasses an previous accident this month when a train smashed into a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had several non-deadly derailments.
Calls for Investigation and Halt
In the wake of the tragedy, the head of a major opposition party urged an prompt pause in the building and running of all such projects.
This pause was suggested until the completion of a thorough independent investigation. The party stated that the situation "demands prompt explanations."
In reply, the national leader asserted that the train had been operating in total accordance with all security protocols. Commitments were given that the government would be "accountable" in both the development and operation of these vital initiatives.
